Friday August 20
An invitation to love.
  • Ruth 1: 1-6, 14-22
  • Psalm 146: 5-10
  • Matthew 22: 34-40

How hard could it be to love God with all our heart, all our soul and all our mind? It may seem easy enough until we are reminded afresh that loving God alone is not what we are called to do. It is like trying to open a combination lock with only one digit of the combination. Our love for God comes to perfection, only when we are able to love one another as God us, without reservation. Simple as it may sound, we know how hard it can be when we try to put this command into practice. It may be easy to love someone who treats us well, gives us support, who is there for us in need but what about the neighbour who spreads rumours about us? What about friends who are using us for their own gain? Think of the many people in our lives, who simply bring pain and suffering to us over and again, despite our very best efforts to love them… Are we able to open our hearts with love when we gain nothing out of it? Ruth sets one such example in her action today by choosing to stand by Naomi who had little or nothing useful to offer, and this is our invitation today….

Prayer: Abba Father, fill our hearts with love, selfless enough to reach out to others regardless of what we receive in return. Amen!
