Are you careless?
  • 1 Thessalonians 4: 1-8
  • Psalm 97: 1-2, 5-12
  • Matthew 25:1-13

In his letter to the Thessalonians St. Paul is addressing the lustful behaviour of some of the early Christians. Even though they had tasted the love of our Lord they had quietly lost their way and faithfulness for their spouses and were living lives of lust. In other words, ‘Could they care any less”. Their lives -and this can happen to us- were caught up in the excitement of wrong relationships and emotions. But God’s call was and is – to become holy and not to have unlawful sex because we disobey not a human but God himself who gives us His Holy Spirit. In the Gospel proclamation, the five careless bridesmaids, were least prepared for the arrival of the groom. When we are caught up in sin, we fail to prepare ourselves to receive the presence of God.To lack oil is to lack a life spent in times of prayer. The Lord’s answer to the five careless bridesmaids was Truly I do not know you. May we be ready with prayer.
