The Greatest Commandment
  • Ruth 1:1,3-6,14-16,22
  • Psalm 146:5-10
  • Matthew 22:34-40

Today’s Gospel proclamation reminds us of the Greatest Commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbor as your self.” (Mt 22: 37,39) The Bible is all about the love of God. The culmination of God’s love was the death and resurrection of Jesus that redeemed us from our sins. This opened the way to eternal life for all who believed in Jesus. It is said in 1 Jn 4:19-21 “We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God” yet hates his brother, he is a liar.” When I look back at my life it was the love of God that came in search of me, when I was far away from him, when I was lost in this world, in my sin. He revealed his love into my depths and he made all things new. Once we experience this love, no longer can we live for ourselves, our first love has to be God and love experienced in our depths needs to be shared with our brothers and sisters too. Thus it is said in 1 Jn 4:17, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.”

Prayer: Abba Father, fill us with the Holy Spirit to experience your love in our hearts that will enable us to obey your Greatest Commandment. Amen.
