Signs and our relationship with Jesus
  • Jonah 3:1-10
  • Psalm 51:3-4,12-13,18-19
  • Luke 11:29-32

At times we ask for signs from the Lord. At times the Lord in his grace gives us signs. In today’s readings Jesus gets angry because the people are asking for signs. God has always provided for their needs and protected them. He often gave signs to show his lordship. He wanted them and us to trust him, listen to him and love him. Jesus said to Peter: “Do you love me”. He asks this of Peter three times. My view is that he is asking Peter if he loves him for himself or because he gave them bread to eat. By the third time Peter understood and he replied from his heart “Lord you know I love you”. Jesus is asking us the same question: do we love him because we want something or do we love him for who he is. This is an intimate question. If we truly love him, we will trust him and know that he hears us. We won’t need to ask for a sign. Nevertheless when we see signs of his presence, his healing, his protection and his mercy we are encouraged in our love and faith.

PRAYER: Abba Father, we love you. Increase our faith. Amen.
