Thursday June 29
Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles
Bearing witness to Christ
  • Acts 12:1-11
  • Psalm 34:2-9
  • 2 Timothy 4:6-8.17-18
  • Matthew 16:13-19

Today we celebrate the solemnity of the pillars of the Church. St. Peter being the first Pope was called to carry out the mission to the Jews while St. Paul was called to do the same for the Gentiles. Both of these prominent characters had to suffer for the sake of Christ and be martyred. St. Peter was willing to be crucified head down and St. Paul was beheaded. Both had a strong conviction and were willing to face obstacles carrying out their mission. If the same question is raised by Christ “Who do you say I am?”, like St. Peter do we answer saying: “You are the Christ, the son of the living God”? Having professed our faith, are we convinced to be engaged in mission whole heartedly with a zealous missionary zeal for the Lord? Let us invoke the power of the Holy Spirit to be empowered in a special way to fulfill this calling. As we are called to be involved in the triple functions of Christ through Baptism, as priests, prophets and kings let us be prepared to do our part for the sake of Christ our Lord.

Prayer: Abba Father, make me strong and bold to witness to your Son. Amen.
