The Gospel passage today is one of the significant moments where the Father accepts Jesus as His Son. This is called a ‘Theophany’, commonly understood as a manifestation of God. As Catholics, when we profess the creed during mass, we proclaim; ‘God from God, light from light, true God from true God’, this is truly justified in this Gospel passage where it manifests the presence of the Trinity. It is not a coincidence that the three apostles are with Jesus in this moment.

God reveals Jesus’s identity to them and asks them to listen to whatever He has to say – Because Jesus is the total revelation of God. We come to know the union of the Trinity and the communion and love between them through Jesus’ words, and deeds. Some scholars identify the appearance of Moses and Elijah with Jesus as a sign where Jesus becomes the fulfilment of the law and what the prophets said. Jesus is the long awaited Messiah and God Himself is present among them.
