Tuesday April 25
The Lord must increase and I must decrease
  • 1 Peter 5:5-14
  • Psalm 89:2-3,6-7,16-17
  • Mark 16:15-20

Today’s first reading points out to us why we should be humble: because God opposes the proud. We have heard the saying “Pride goes before a fall”. Humility is an important virtue. The more we humble ourselves before God, we can be sure that we will be exalted by him. Humility challenges many of us. When we are wrong how difficult it is for us to apologise? It is time for us to sow seeds of humility in our broken relationships. Pope Francis, once knelt and kissed the feet of two South Sudanese leaders imploring them to pursue peace. That was an act of profound humility. Imagine the beauty we can bring about and the kingdom joy we could experience if we could apply this to our lives. Let us make this choice empowered by the Holy Spirit to carry out the words of our Lord, “Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to the whole of creation”. As Christians signs of God’s power will accompany us. As pride is a sin, and is a cause for disobedience, let us remove this trace of sin in our lives through humility.

Prayer: Abba Father, empower us by your Holy Spirit to be humble. Amen.
