Promise of immortality
  • Genesis 17:3-9
  • Psalm 105:4-9
  • John 8:51-59

Many people say that they like to live forever. The good news is that we can, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16. Am I like some people who say that Jesus is my God yet question everything about God – because I do not know Him or His voice? Or do I want to be like Abraham who believed in God’s word and promise? When we believe in God’s words and promises, the sting of death is taken away and we realize that death is only a gateway to eternal life. Just like the many Saints of the Church, we will even be willing to give up our lives for God. “Being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross!” (Phil 2:8) God emptied himself so that we may have eternal life. We are children of the resurrection (Luke 20:36) and our God is not the God of the dead, but of the living (Luke 20:38). Let us hold on to this promise of immortality – our ambition in life – through the gateway of death.

Prayer: Abba Father, as I obey your word, may my eyes be fixed on eternal life. Amen.
