Taking refuge in God.
  • Jeremiah 11:18-20
  • Psalm 7:2-3, 9-12
  • John 7:40-53

In today’s first reading, to Jeremiah’s surprise, his hometown Anathoth’s people were plotting to kill him. They wanted to silence Jeremiah’s message for several reasons: Economic – his condemnation of idol worship would hurt the business of the idol makers. Religious – the message of doom and gloom made the people feel depressed and guilty. Political – he openly rebuked their hypocritical politics. And personally, the people hated him for showing them that they were wrong. Jeremiah had two options: run and hide or call on God. Jeremiah called, and God answered. Like Jeremiah, we too have two options; we can either run and hide when we face opposition because of our faithfulness to God, or we can call on God for help. Many years ago in my immaturity, I hid from everything, including God. But the prophets’ example have helped me grow into taking refuge in God. Let us not forget that hiding compromises our message; therefore let us call on God and allow Him to reinforce it.

Prayer: Abba Father, help me to be bold like your servant Jeremiah. Amen.
