Give thanks to God with a Grateful Heart
  • Ezekiel 47: 1-2, 8-9, 12
  • Psalm 46: 2-3, 5-6, 8-9
  • 1 Corinthians 3: 9-11, 16-17
  • John 2: 13-22

In the first reading, Ezekiel describes what he sees: water. Water is ordinary, yet it reveals extraordinary truths. In Scripture, water often points to three aspects of God: his love, his sovereignty, and his life-giving power. We hear a splash of his love at creation, when the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. The word “hovering” is rarely used in the Bible; in Deuteronomy, it describes a mother bird hovering over her young, urging them to fly. It is an image of affection, protection, and nearness. We also hear of his sovereignty: God spoke the waters into existence, and they have never stepped outside his command. God created humans, but when they disobeyed, their thirst became clear. In the Gospel reading, Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman, offering “living water.” He alone satisfies humanity’s longing for God. We too chase lesser wells, yet only Jesus quenches our thirst forever. Let us thirst for his living water.

PRAYER: Abba Father, thank you for everything. Amen.
