Draw near to God
  • Genesis 28:10-22
  • Psalm 91:1-4,14-15
  • Matthew 9:18-26

In today’s first reading, we see God extending his covenant promise first made to Abraham and Isaac—to Jacob. Yet, Jacob’s inheritance of this covenant was not automatic. It was not enough to be Abraham’s grandson; God had to establish a covenant with Jacob. Similarly, we need to cultivate a relationship with God. Bethel, where Jacob had his dream, holds historical and spiritual significance. It was where Abraham offered one of his first sacrifices to God upon entering the land. Jacob’s response after his dream at Bethel raises an interesting question: was he trying to bargain with God? Or did he make a pledge in response to God’s blessings? Regardless of Jacob’s motives, God chose to bless him. Jacob’s journey with God included lessons in humility, faith, and obedience difficult but transformative experiences. Let us reflect on our walk with God. Are we following him out of a sense of duty? Are we setting conditions and boundaries for our relationship with God?

PRAYER: Abba Father, thank you for choosing us to be your children. May our desire for you grow deeper. Amen.
