Blessed are the poor in spirit
  • Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13
  • Psalm 40:2,4,7-10
  • 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
  • Matthew 5:1-12

God’s kingdom is built through humility, trust, and a longing for righteousness. In the first reading, God promises to preserve “a humble and lowly people.” These are not the powerful or self-assured, but those who seek the Lord with sincerity. Their security comes not from status, but from resting in God’s faithfulness. Holiness grows where pride gives way to dependence on God. St. Paul tells the Corinthian community that God chooses “the foolish, the weak, and the lowly” to shame the strong. This is because God works through those who know they need grace. Our boast, Paul insists, is not in ourselves but in the Lord who saves and transforms. Jesus’ Beatitudes reveal the shape of that transformation. The poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, and the peacemakers are those whose lives reflect God’s heart. These promises invite us to embrace a discipleship grounded in humility, compassion, and the courage to seek God above all else.

PRAYER: Abba Father, may I boast in you alone. Amen.
