Today’s Gospel reading reveals the Lord’s heart for sinners and social outcasts. Matthew was a tax collector, working for the Roman authorities who did not pay him much. It was common for tax collectors to overcharge people and keep the excess for themselves. As a result, many tax collectors were socially and morally corrupt. Jesus did not condemn Matthew. He said, “Follow me”. He called Matthew as he was and loved him. When we make a mistake, the Father’s mercy awakens repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation and peace. Je- sus accepts us and loves us the way we are, and we can come to him just as we are. However, once we begin our journey with him, we will be changed according to his will. The Father’s desire is for us to become more like Jesus, and this means growing in his character. Let us spend more time deepening our intimacy with the One who is love. In his presence, we will be changed and transformed to love.
PRAYER: Abba Father, let me never forget that you loved me first. Change my heart to become more like you. Amen.
