Fourth Week of Easter
Humility
  • Acts 13:13-25
  • Psalm 89:2-3,21-22,25,27
  • John 13:16-20

Let us reflect on humility, a quality that is necessary to reach holiness. John the Baptist did not say that he is great, but humbly proclaimed the coming of the Messiah. In the Jewish tradition it is the lowest of tasks to untie another person’s sandals. John knew the greatness of the Messiah and he was humble enough to accept it. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Jesus the Lord and master did the job traditionally done by a servant. Thus he is teaching us that we need to be servant leaders. If it is not beneath Jesus to wash the feet of his disciples, then it is not beneath us to be servant leaders. Jesus’ practice of leadership was distinctly different from the self-seeking, self-serving and domineering style of leadership of the world. We need humility to be leaders who serve. Let us examine our conscience. At my work place, in Church groups, in the community, at school, and at home we may be leaders. Let us ask the Lord to show us the way we should lead.

PRAYER: Abba Father, anoint us with your Holy Spirit and make us willing to serve than to be served. Amen.
