The Greatest Sacrifice
  • Genesis 14:18-20
  • Psalm 110:1-4
  • 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
  • Luke 9:11-17

In today’s first reading, Abram encounters Melchizedek. The offering of bread and wine holds special significance as it foreshadows the Eucharist, where Christ offers his body and blood for our nourishment. In the second reading St. Paul recounts the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, to reflect on Jesus’ great sacrifice when he broke the bread and shared the chalice. Jesus’ command: “do this in memory of me” shows the importance of partaking in the Eucharist. In the Gospel reading, we see how Jesus feeds a crowd of over five thousand people. We are reminded to trust in God’s provision for our physical and spiritual needs in his desire to bless, nourish, and sustain us. Jesus cares for his people and teaches us that in moments of scarcity, God provides generously. When we come to the Altar, we are invited to share in the abundant grace of God. We are called to bring our limited resources to Jesus, trusting that he can multiply them for the good of his kingdom.

PRAYER: Abba Father, may we live in the awareness of your abundant grace, nourished by your presence, and ready to share your blessings. Amen.
