Traditions help us connect to our past, build a sense of identity and strengthen social relationships. However God’s word and his presence are more important than tradition, no matter how ancient or hallowed. This is the clash we observe between Jesus and the Pharisees. The Pharisees were more intent on following the traditions of the elders rather than following God’s word or encountering the Messiah. We too can easily fall into the trap of meticulously following external rituals, and traditional practices. We may even pride ourselves as being better than others, but we may fail to recognize God’s presence in our midst. The Lord is calling us to draw closer to him through prayer, to fix our gaze upon him through scripture, and encounter his merciful loving presence through the sacraments. As we continue to search for him with all our hearts we will find him. In his presence we find our identity and the true meaning of our existence.
Abba Father, I desire more of you, fill my heart with more of your presence. Amen.
