In Deuteronomy, God reminds his people that choosing to follow his commandments is not a burden but a privilege. By walking in his ways, keeping his statutes, and listening to his voice, the Israelites enter into a covenant that promises life, blessing, and a unique identity as God’s treasured people. Faithfulness to God shapes their character and their witness in the world. In the Gospel, Jesus challenges this understanding of obedience by calling his followers to a love that goes beyond natural inclination. He invites us to love our enemies, pray for those who persecute us, and strive for perfection as our Heavenly Father is perfect. God’s love knows no limits, and he calls us to reflect that same boundless love in our relationships. Obedience to God’s commandments leads us into a life that mirrors his mercy, justice, and compassion, transforming both our hearts and the world around us. Living this love is the true measure of holiness.
Abba Father, I will give you thanks with an upright heart. Amen.
