Sirach reminds us that God has placed before us the dignity of choice: life or death, good or evil. God does not force us; he invites. True freedom is not the ability to do whatever we want, but the grace-filled capacity to choose the good. Our decisions shape our hearts and reveal whom we ultimately trust. St. Paul speaks of a wisdom hidden from the world: God’s wisdom, revealed through the Spirit. This wisdom is not cleverness or human insight but the surprising, transforming love of God that “eye has not seen” and “ear has not heard.” Only hearts open to the Spirit can recognize the depth of what God has prepared for those who love him. Jesus does not abolish the law but fulfills it by calling us beyond external observance to interior conversion. Anger, lust, dishonesty: these begin in the heart before they reach our actions. Jesus desires a righteousness rooted in integrity. God invites us to choose life from the depths of our hearts, where true discipleship begins.
Abba Father, let my ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and my ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Amen.
