Compassion for Others
  • Romans 9:1-5
  • Psalm 147:12-15,19-20
  • Luke 14:1-6

St. Paul expresses deep sorrow for his fellow Israelites who have not embraced Christ. His anguish is so great that he says he would be willing to be cut off from Christ if it meant their salvation. His heart reflects the self-giving love of Christ-a love that grieves for the lost and desires their redemption. Even though Israel was given so many blessings, covenants, the law, the promises-they did not recognize the Messiah. Paul reminds us that love for others includes a deep concern for their spiritual well-being. In the Gospel reading, Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath and challenges the religious leaders’ rigid legalism. He asks them whether it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath, confronting their lack of compassion. Mercy outweighs tradition, and love fulfills the law. Let us value people over rules and long for their healing-spiritually and physically. As followers of Christ, we are called to share both his truth and his compassion, praying for the lost and acting with mercy.

PRAYER: Abba Father, teach us to care for the lost and to act with love, even when it costs us. Amen
