St. Peter confronts the people with their role in crucifying the Messiah. One translation of this reading says the people were “cut to the heart,” so great was their conviction. They asked Peter what they could do. He speaks with love and tells them to repent and be baptized for forgiveness. Then they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. That promise was made for them and their children. This promise continues for everyone God calls. No matter how guilty we might feel or what sin we have committed, God is waiting for us because of his great love for us. This is revealed in the ultimate act of God’s love: sending his Son as a sacrifice for us. We can move beyond guilt to a true turning from sin. By the power of the Holy Spirit given to us, we are able to live as forgiven, free people, reflecting Christ’s Lordship. This calls us to action and mission. Let us ask for more grace to understand what we cannot, and to go forth in the love that he has for us, so that we would be a light to others.
Abba Father, we thank you. Amen.
