Blessed are they who hope in the Lord
  • Jeremiah 17:5-10
  • Psalm 1:1-4,6
  • Luke 16:19-31

Today’s first reading contrasts two ways of living: trusting in human strength versus trusting in the Lord. The one who trusts in the Lord is compared to a tree planted by water that remains fruitful in all seasons. Trusting in God does not remove life’s circumstances; rather, it provides the foundation to hold on to God and to know that we can soar above those circumstances when we walk with him. Where do our “roots” lie? What do we rely on when circumstances become difficult? In the Gospel, we see the indifference of the rich man towards Lazarus, who is overlooked by society. The rich man failed to see the suffering around him. Sometimes we fail to see the suffering of our brothers and sisters because we are busy and preoccupied. Let us examine not only our actions but our awareness. Who lies at our gate? Whose suffering have we learned to step over? We are to live with justice, mercy, compassion, and love. Let us respond with love and allow our hearts to be converted.

Abba Father, may I respond with love to others’ needs. Amen.
