A new heart and a new spirit
  • Isaiah 1:10, 16-20
  • Psalm 50: 8-9, 16-17, 21-23
  • Matthew 23:1-12

In the first reading, God speaks sharply to a people who are faithful in appearance but distant in heart. Their sacrifices and gatherings mean nothing because their lives are marked by injustice and unrepentant sin. God’s call is simple but costly: “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; learn to do good.” Obedience is what opens the door to blessing. Psalm 50 reminds us that God does not need our offerings; everything already belongs to him. What he desires is a life that honours his covenant: one shaped by gratitude, obedience, and humility. The warning is sobering. God sees silence not as approval, but as a moment of patience calling for reflection and change. Jesus brings this message to its climax in the Gospel. He exposes religious leaders who seek titles, recognition, and outward displays of holiness. True greatness, Jesus teaches, is found in servanthood and humility before God and others. God is not impressed by performance; he desires a transformed heart.

Abba Father, teach me to seek you with all my heart. Amen.
