Today’s readings remind us of the holiness, power, and authority of God. Jesus, after his resurrection, sent the promised Holy Spirit. Today’s Gospel message speaks of finding hope and healing amid the broken moments of life. I often wonder what Jesus’ disciples must have felt in the aftermath of the crucifixion. Fear and sadness, yes: but deep down, did they second-guess their choice to believe in him? They walked into Jerusalem with the conviction and expectation, believing that Jesus was going to ‘set things right’. The Gospel speaks of two disciples walking away from Jerusalem: the city they walked into with Jesus ended in a seemingly abysmal end. I have encountered moments where God’s answer is “no”, and it feels like the end of the road. I struggle to recognise Jesus amid my pain and disappointment. Yet the disciples returned to a Jerusalem where Jesus has defeated death, bringing joy and hope. Let us seek Jesus even when we face setbacks.
Lord Jesus, open the Scriptures to us; make our hearts burn while you speak to us. Amen.
