God’s Word demands a response. In the Acts of the Apostles, Stephen speaks with courage and truth, calling the people to conversion. His words are resisted, because they challenge hardened hearts. Even as he is martyred, Stephen fixes his gaze on heaven and entrusts himself to God. His witness reminds us that faithfulness to Christ is not always comfortable, but it is always life-giving. In the Gospel, the crowd asks Jesus for a sign, recalling the manna in the desert. Jesus responds by redirecting them from what merely sustains the body to what gives eternal life. He declares, “I am the bread of life.” Those who come to him will never hunger or thirst again. Jesus offers himself, not as another miracle to be seen, but as a relationship to be lived. Where do we seek our nourishment? Do we resist the truth that challenges us, or do we allow Christ to feed and transform us? When we choose Jesus, even in difficulty, we discover a life that never runs empty.
Abba Father, you are my rock and my fortress; lead me and guide me. Amen.
