Despite being created in the image of God, we struggle to recognize that God is loving and trustworthy. The Israelites, who lived as slaves in Egypt, were led to freedom by God through Moses. Yet they could not recognize or trust God who took them safely to the land he had prepared for them. They trusted their senses and understanding; demanding that God satisfy their needs. Why did they still falter in their trust in the goodness of God? Could this be because they did not have a relationship with God? The Gospel speaks of Jesus, the giver of living water, requesting water from a Samaritan woman. The Samaritan woman represents fallen humanity. Jesus seeks her out and engages in dialogue with her. Is this not what happens to us when we meet Jesus? We cannot contain our excitement at meeting the source of living water. We are made right with God by the saving work of Jesus. He is the living water who pours himself out for us. Let us not harden our hearts, but trust in him.
Abba Father, all my life you have been faithful, with every breath I will sing of your goodness. Amen.
