Encountering divine authority
  • Jude 17, 20-25
  • Psalm 63:2-6
  • Mark 11:27-33

The religious authorities challenged the Lord’s authority, and he reveals his divine origin. They resist accepting this reality, believing it would undermine their position in society. How often do we, too, resist losing our sense of self-importance when confronted by Truth? The Lord seeks a relationship with us, but the fear of being challenged to live differently can terrify us. Wanting to live as we please often makes us avoid facing the truth. Sin then becomes an obstacle to that relationship with the Lord. An authentic relationship with him awakens a mystical experience within us. It is so invigorating that we begin to desire change and a new way of living. This brings an inner tranquility, even amid depression, despair, or darkness. There are listening barriers: judging from our limited perceptions, filtering through past negative experiences, rehearsing what we want to say, derailing by changing the subject. These barriers block the possibility of divine encounters.

PRAYER: Abba Father, may I in humility remain silent and listen when you speak through others. Amen.
