Today the Church remembers St Bonaventure, whose theology united intellect and prayer. The readings contrast humility and pride. Isaiah describes arrogance that mistakes power for self-sufficiency. The ruler boasts as though achievements came entirely from personal strength. Then Jesus rejoices because divine mysteries are revealed not primarily to the powerful or learned, but to the humble. This does not condemn knowledge. Bonaventure himself was one of the Church’s greatest scholars. Rather, it reminds us that wisdom and humility must remain together. St. Bonaventure wrote: “No one can enter into himself unless Christ be his guide.” Knowledge informs the mind. Grace transforms the person. The Gospel invites a childlike openness that allows God to teach the heart. Let us ask ourselves how deeply we allow God to shape us. Humility is not thinking less of oneself. It is making room for Christ to become greater in us.
PRAYER: Abba Father, as I humble myself, reveal to me the mysteries of the Kingdom. Amen.
