Saint John the Baptist’s life was marked by purpose even before his birth. In Isaiah, we hear of one called from the womb, formed to be a light to the nations. This prophecy finds a profound echo in John, whose entire existence points beyond himself to Christ. His mission is clear: to prepare the way, to make straight the path of the Lord. In the second reading, the history of salvation unfolds as God raises leaders and prophets, culminating in the coming of the Savior. John bridges promise and fulfillment. The Gospel highlights the wonder surrounding John’s birth. His name, given by God, signals that something new is unfolding. In a world of expectations, God acts in surprising ways, inviting trust and openness. Saint Augustine said, “John is the voice, but the Lord is the Word.” Let us be voices that point to Christ, not to ourselves. May we, like him, grow in faith, and humility, so that our lives may prepare the way for the Lord in the hearts of others.
