Today’s first reading recounts how Elijah was taken into heaven, and how the same power and anointing passed to Elisha. In the Gospel reading, the Lord Jesus teaches us how to pray. He uses the word “pagans” to warn us not to follow those who worship false gods, who pray without understanding or meaning in their words. The Lord Jesus calls us to awaken to the meaning and depth of our prayers, offering them with sincerity and attentiveness. By teaching the Lord’s Prayer, he shows that we should place our spiritual needs above physical and external ones. Asking for God’s will to be done in our midst, offering forgiveness for others as he forgives us, and trusting fully in his providence are the most important petitions we can offer. When this prayer shapes our hearts, guides our actions, and informs our daily choices, we are transformed, and through us, the world around us begins to be transformed as well.
