People often feel that fear speaks louder than faith. King Ahaz faces political threats and overwhelming uncertainty. Yet through Isaiah, God gives a striking command: “Remain calm and do not fear.” The instruction sounds simple, but anyone who has carried anxiety knows how difficult it is. Meanwhile, in the Gospel, Jesus laments cities that witnessed miracles yet remained unchanged. They saw signs but resisted conversion. Together, the readings reveal an important truth: unbelief is not always lack of evidence. Sometimes it is refusal to trust. God may already be present, already speaking, already acting, yet fear keeps the heart closed. The invitation is to trust. Trust that God remains active even when circumstances appear unstable. Trust that grace is working even when results seem invisible. Trust that Christ remains Lord even when life feels uncertain. Faith begins when fear no longer has the final word. And often that beginning is enough for God to do extraordinary things.
