Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path
  • 1 Kings 21:1-16
  • Psalm 5:2-7
  • Matthew 5:38-42

Today’s first reading shows the lengths people go to satisfy desires for power, authority, and material possessions: even if unlawful, even if it causes harm and injustice to the innocent. When accumulation of wealth and power becomes the driving force, selfishness and greed take over, and people drift from the kingdom way of living to worldly ways. The fruits of the Spirit are overtaken by worldly desires. This is a dangerous place, as Jesus warns that the joy and happiness from the world is temporary compared to the eternal joy we receive when we follow him and live according to his word. As the psalmist says, God’s word is a “lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Only Jesus gives guidance and shows the way. The Gospel challenges us to live as children of God, carrying his light in a world that is resentful, loveless, and full of harm. We are called to respond to evil with love, to show mercy and generosity, and to bear witness to Jesus so that the world may see and believe.

PRAYER: Abba Father, I pray for the strength to be a shining light by spreading your word to a world that does not know you. Amen.
