When a farmer scatters seed, some disappear immediately, others grow briefly, some others are choked, while others flourish. Jesus uses this parable to explain a deeper message: it is not whether God speaks, but whether the heart receives. Isaiah assures us that God’s word never returns empty. Yet the Gospel reminds us that fruitfulness depends on receptivity. Grace is offered freely, but hearts can remain hardened, shallow, or crowded. Stubborn resentment can become rocky ground. Endless distraction can become thorns. Pride can become a hardened path. Yet the Lord never stops sowing. Even after countless refusals, God continues to pour out his grace on us with amazing generosity. Instead of examining the seed, let us reflect on the soil. What occupies the deepest spaces of our hearts? What prevents the Word from taking root? The harvest God desires is already hidden within the seed. The task of the disciple is simply to remain open enough for growth.
