St Benedict reminds us that holiness is built through discipline. Benedict lived during social collapse and uncertainty, yet instead of despairing, he created communities rooted in prayer, work, study, and stability. His wisdom echoes today’s first reading: seek understanding as one searches for hidden treasure. Modern life trains the mind toward distraction. Benedict teaches recollection. The Gospel speaks of leaving everything for Christ. Many imagine this only in dramatic terms. Yet Benedict shows another path: surrender through daily faithfulness: rising for prayer, doing ordinary work well, and remaining steadfast in commitment. His famous instruction remains timeless: “Prefer nothing whatever to Christ.” Those words reveal the heart of discipleship. The greatest obstacles to holiness are often not great sins but divided priorities. Let us ask ourselves not merely whether Christ is important, but whether he is first. When Christ becomes the centre, peace will flow.
