I am the resurrection and the life
  • Jeremiah 15:10, 16-21
  • Psalm 59:2-4, 10-11, 17-18
  • John 11:19-27

Jeremiah speaks with honesty. He feels isolated, misunderstood, and wounded by the mission God entrusted to him. Yet in the middle of his lament comes a confession: “When I found your words, I devoured them.” God’s word became both his burden and his joy. The story of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus presents a similar lesson. In the Gospel, Martha meets Christ in the midst of grief. She does not hide her disappointment: “Lord, if you had been here…” Yet her sorrow becomes an act of faith. She continues, “I have come to believe.” Both readings reveal mature faith. Faith is not pretending everything is fine. It is remaining with God even when questions remain unanswered. The saints of Bethany teach us that friendship with Christ includes both hospitality and trust. Jeremiah teaches perseverance. Let us bring our wounds before the Lord. He is closest not only in joy, but also in faithful endurance through suffering and uncertainty.

PRAYER: Rescue me from my enemies, O my God; from my adversaries defend me. Amen.
