Through Jeremiah, God remembers Israel’s early devotion: “I remember the love of your youth.” What began as covenant intimacy slowly became distance. The tragedy was not merely disobedience but abandonment of the “fountain of living water” for broken cisterns that could not satisfy. The Gospel explains why many fail to understand God’s voice. The problem is not lack of revelation but lack of openness. Hearts can become so occupied with other things that truth passes by unnoticed. The life of St Bridget of Sweden offers a striking contrast. Amid family life, political turmoil, and personal suffering, she continually returned to God through prayer and conversion. She once wrote: “The Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our works as at the love with which they are done.” Let us ask ourselves: from which fountain am I drinking? Because only God can satisfy the thirsts that earthly substitutes can never truly fill.
