We live in a world that applauds pleasing people more than pleasing God. Prophet Jeremiah chose to boldly proclaim God’s word. Rather than discerning and obeying the Word of God that came through the prophet Jeremiah, the priests and prophets opted to get rid of him. Yet the ordinary people of Judah discerned the prophetic word and responded with wisdom and prudence. The Gospel reiterates that the values of the world are not those of the Kingdom. Herod bowed down to pleasing people, simply because they brought him sensual pleasure. Today we celebrate the life of St. Alphonsus Liguori, who founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). It is said that many of his books were written in the half hours snatched from his labours as a superior in the midst of physical and mental sufferings. Let us find inspiration in his words: “The past is no longer yours; the future is not yet in your power. You have only the present wherein to do good.”
