Take courage… do not be afraid.
  • Jeremiah 28:1-17
  • Psalm 119:29,43,79-80,95,102
  • Matthew 14:22-36

Saint Peter was empowered to walk on water, but when he saw the wind and waves, he began to sink. He was bold on one side, but a failure on the other. Looking at the threat, he started going down. Had he not looked at the wind, but at the Lord, the empowerment would have remained. We have all gone that way. The more we keep looking at what causes fear, the scarier it becomes. Fear says, “Look at me,” and not at the Lord. Pontius Pilate said to Jesus, “I have the power to crucify you”: the same thing every threat says to you and me: “I have the power to destroy your life.” Yet the Lord says, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given to you from above.” Is something threatening your life? Let us look to the Lord: “fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (cf. Hebrews 12:2), and not on what is going on in our marriage, body, home, or finances: especially if it is terrifying us. Let us take courage and not be afraid.

PRAYER: Lord, teach me your statutes. Amen.
