James wanted glory. Jesus offered the cup of suffering. The Gospel reveals a dramatic contrast between human ambition and divine greatness. The mother of James and John asks for places of honor. Christ responds by speaking of suffering, sacrifice, and service. The feast of St James the Apostle reminds us that discipleship eventually reshapes ambition itself. The first reading describes believers as “earthen vessels” carrying heavenly treasure. God often works through weakness rather than prestige. James eventually drank the cup Christ spoke about. Tradition remembers him not for seeking status, but for faithful witness. True greatness in the Kingdom looks remarkably different from worldly success. It kneels. It serves. It gives itself away. What motivates my desire to succeed? Recognition? Control? Security? Or love? The saints became great because they stopped seeking greatness for themselves. And in that surrender, Christ became visible through them.
