We are called to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus. The cross may come as a persistent problem or a difficult responsibility. Often, we try to avoid it, but Jesus invites us to embrace the cross as he did. To do this, we must deny ourselves and shift our focus from self-centeredness to caring for others. Many people constantly worry, asking, “Who will look after me?” or “What will happen to me?” Yet the Lord Jesus calls us to look beyond ourselves and ask where we have failed to love others. Our struggles help us to grow in holiness through surrender and perseverance. “What you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me,” says the Lord. Our good deeds are never forgotten by God and will one day be rewarded. In Gethsemane, Jesus struggled, yet he prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done,” and received strength from heaven. Likewise, whenever we take up our cross, our loving and faithful God will help us.
PRAYER: Abba Father, help us to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow you. Amen.
