St Paul addresses the temptation of pride by reminding the Corinthians that every gift ultimately comes from God. We often take ownership of talents, achievements, and opportunities as though they were self-created. Paul challenges this attitude by asking what anyone possesses that has not first been received. This theme is reflected in the Gospel, where Jesus declares himself Lord of the Sabbath. The Pharisees had become so focused on regulations that they failed to recognize the presence of the One who gave the law. Their attachment to external observance prevented them from seeing the deeper purpose behind God’s commandments. Humility is not thinking poorly of ourselves but recognizing the truth about who we are before God. Every blessing, whether material or spiritual, is a gift entrusted to us for his glory and the service of others. When we recognize how generously God has provided for us, comparison and self-importance begin to fade.
