Jesus associated with those whom others would avoid, offering them acceptance and companionship. The Pharisees, however, questioned why he was eating with sinners. We often think of the “black sheep” in our families or workplaces, but fail to see the darkness within ourselves. We can hide behind a mask of perfection, while in reality we are wounded, reactive, hurt, and bitter. Out of fear of rejection or misunderstanding, we build a façade. Yet Jesus invites us to remove these masks, for nothing is hidden from him. He sees us fully and desires to heal our deepest wounds. We are called to stop blaming others and to surrender ourselves for healing. He gently frees us from what holds us back, restores us, and heals us. Jesus does not only accept us as we are; he also calls us to a journey of transformation. As St. Paul reminds us in Ephesians, we must walk in a manner worthy of our calling. Today, like St. Matthew, we are invited to accept that call and follow him.
