St Paul describes the Church as the Body of Christ, made up of many members united in one Spirit. Every member has a place, a purpose, and a responsibility within that living body. No vocation is insignificant, and no suffering is carried alone. What affects one member touches the whole Church. This truth becomes especially meaningful as we contemplate Mary standing at the foot of the Cross. In the Gospel, she remains beside her Son in his final moments, sharing in his suffering through her faithful love. At that sacred hour, Jesus entrusts her to the beloved disciple and entrusts the disciple to her. In this gesture, Mary’s motherhood extends beyond John and embraces the entire community of believers. Mary’s sorrow is deeply ecclesial. She stands as a mother among the members of Christ’s Body, accompanying them through suffering and leading them toward her Son. Her example teaches that faithfulness is expressed through steadfast love.
