The Gospel reveals the compassion of Christ in a striking way. Faced with a man whose hand was withered, Jesus does not allow legalistic interpretations of the Sabbath to prevent an act of mercy. He places the suffering person at the centre of attention and restores him before all who are present. The reaction of the religious leaders highlights a danger that can affect every believer. It is possible to become so concerned with rules and appearances that one loses sight of the people whom those rules are meant to serve. True holiness never diminishes compassion. St Paul’s words to the Corinthians also focus on purification and renewal. He urges the community to remove what is harmful so that they may become a new creation in Christ. Such purification is not an end in itself but a path toward greater freedom and holiness. The Lord continually calls us to truth and mercy. When these two virtues remain together, wounded hearts could encounter healing and transformation.
