Today’s Gospel reveals a powerful and sobering truth about discipleship. Just moments after Peter is praised and blessed by Jesus for recognizing him as the Messiah and being called the “rock,” we see a sudden shift. The same Peter, out of deep love and human concern, tries to stop Jesus from going to the cross. In doing so, he unknowingly stands against the very purpose of Christ’s mission: the will of God that would bring salvation to the world. Like Peter, we may resist pain, sacrifice, and uncertainty. But Jesus makes it clear that following him is to “take up our cross”. It is a call to surrender to God’s will, even when it challenges our desires and understanding. Often, we want control: we want life on our own terms. Saying yes to him is not easy; it requires trust. But in that surrender, God’s love becomes real in our lives, and his presence sustains us. To follow Christ is to choose purpose over comfort, and in that choice we find true life. Are we ready to take up our crosses?
