John the Baptist lost his life for his bravery. Herod wished to save face before his guests, despite his inner misgivings. My choices may not involve matters of life and death, yet I find myself oscillating between being Herod and John in the way I navigate daily life. I notice myself staying silent when friends and colleagues normalise practices such as inflating insurance claims, streaming movies through illegal channels, or greasing the palm of an official. I remain silent because I do not want to be the odd one out or the “Miss Goody Two-Shoes.” In those moments, I am like Herod: afraid of appearing different, weaker, or out of step with the group. I do not want to risk offending others or being ridiculed. Yet with the strength we receive from Christ, we are called to live our faith boldly and steadfastly. Not all are called to preach from pulpits or at stadiums. But, we are all called to live faithful lives in our everyday spaces: simply, boldly, and steadfastly.
