God can prevent bad things from happening to us, yet he often allows us to walk through trials. He permits us to pass through the valley of darkness, face fiery furnaces, encounter a Judas within our circle, or confront a Goliath who fills us with fear and doubt. Through the first reading, God reminds us that his thoughts are not our thoughts, nor his ways our ways. In times of crisis, when we abandon our own plans and seek the Lord, we begin to understand his wisdom. The Crucifixion teaches us that without suffering there can be no Resurrection. In the Gospel reading, the parable of the workers in the vineyard reveals the mercy of God, offered equally to saint and sinner. God never stops seeking the broken, the weak, and the lost. Today, the Lord invites us to shift our focus from our enemies to him. When we surrender our lives to his lordship, he transforms our hearts, fills us with his Spirit, and gives us joy in every season.
