Usually, a person would not refuse an invitation to a banquet hosted by a king. In the Gospel reading, the bridegroom symbolises the Messiah. Jesus is showing how foolish the religious leaders had become by taking lightly the invitation sent by God. Their agendas had become more important and they made fun of the messengers. In Jesus’ culture 2 invitations were sent meaning several months were given for preparation. Matthew is reminding the people ‘you turned away and rejected God not once but twice’. We are called to ‘come as we are’. God expects us to keep up to his high standards in our spiritual journey. Some resort to God only in emergencies while giving priority to worldly possessions, wealth, enjoyment. Do we spent enough time to cultivate a close relationship with God and prepare for the King’s banquet? Truly there is a judgement day. Let us not be caught off guard, instead be well prepared for the coming of the Lord.
PRAYER: Abba Father, help us to be focused on you. Do not allow us to go away from you. Amen.
