Spiritual Obedience
  • Joel 4:12-21
  • Psalm 97:1-2,5-6,11-12
  • Luke 11:27-28

Prophet Joel describes a powerful scene of judgment, where God gathers the nations in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. The imagery is intense, sickles, harvest, reminding us that God is not indifferent to evil. But even as judgment looms, the passage ends with hope: “Judah shall abide forever,” and a fountain shall flow from the house of the Lord. God’s justice and mercy stand together; while he judges sin, he also promises restoration and blessing for his people. In the Gospel reading, a woman praises Jesus’ mother, but Jesus responds, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” This moment shifts focus from physical ties to spiritual obedience. True blessedness comes not from proximity to holiness, but from obedience to God’s Word. Let us strive to live in alignment with God’s justice, not just by hearing his Word but by responding to it. In a world that offers many options, God invites us to choose life, obedience, and blessing.

PRAYER: Abba Father, help us to live faithfully in response to your Word. Let us not only hear your truth, but obey it. Amen.
